Gutterballs (2008) [DVDRip]

Gutterballs is the newest flick from Ryan Nicholson (Live Feed). This time around he takes on the slasher genre with a healthy dose of rape/revenge. Gutterballs sets its sites on 80's slashers, and a strong 80's music soundtrack lets you know this right from the start. This reminded of films like Hide And Go Shriek and Intruder which are both about groups of people trapped in a building unaware that their numbers are dwindling.

The film concerns two bowling teams who don't get along to well. Tempers flare and the evening ends in a pretty nasty rape scene. These days most movies play in safe when rape is part of the story with characters remaining clothed or else the assault occurs off screen. Gutterballs looks back to earlier exploitation flicks and is pretty graphic. Not quite "I Spit On Your Grave" territory, but you'd be hard pressed to find a similar depiction this explicit in any film in the last 10 years.

The next night the bowlers return to continue their match, but someone else has other plans. And that leads to some very entertaining kills, slasher movie style, and some very excellent gore, leading to not quite the ending I expected but which I found quite satisfying.

I saw the uncut version*** and I loved this film. This is the kind of take-no-prisoners graphic horror we seldom see these days, with sex, violence, and sexual violence all right there for the camera. But the film doesn't take itself too seriously, again reflecting its 80's slasher roots. There is some great dialog, and I especially liked the off-kilter delivery of the Joey character. There is a hilarious talking bowling ball polishing machine with attitude. There was a great little Halloween homage that had me laughing.

I'm not sure what will be cut for the R-rated version but this edition is definitely not for your mainstream horror movie tourist. There are some seriously brutal scenes, a hefty level of nudity, and a small bit of activity that would be labeled hardcore sex. I've heard others criticise the use of "expletives". It's not something I noticed, but if you're sensitive to that sort of thing probably will. In other words, the average person will probably find this movie offensive. And that's a good thing, so many movies these days go out of their way to be as inoffensive as possible, movies like this have become a rarity. On the other hand if you're a fan of 70's grindhouse sleaze and 80's slashers then this will be a bit of movie heaven.

The Andromeda Strain (2008)

Dzien Swira (2002)

It is a bitter story about a middle-aged man, who hates his life and other people, including himself. Adam Miauczynski, the character known from director Marek Koterski's previous films, is a 44 year-old teacher, who reads poetry during school lessons and later goes home swearing and calling his neighbours' names. The worst pain for him is the next 5 minutes of living. He doesn't accept himself and even everyday contacts with others cause his aggression. Though constantly dreaming of a romantic love, he is not bold enough to make his dreams come true. The desperate Miauczynski personalizes our own fears and obsessions, which have become so visible recently.

Kariera Nikosia Dyzmy (2002)

Knowing and loving Cezary Pazura as the "Kiler", I was very much looking forward to this movie. And I sure wasn't disappointed, since "Kariera Nikosia Dyzmy" is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. This story of a loser who becomes - by the purest of chances - the Prime Minister of Poland is filled with funny characters and hilarious comments. Lines such as "Ja pana dymam!" or "Blizniaki czterojajowe", "Karmilam kaczky" or "To jest samochod" are truly unforgettable and funny even after I've seen the movie seven times. The story itself is an adaptation of a 20s novel and the creators of this movie deserve credit for transforming the plot and characters into early capitalist Poland of the 90s and doing it perfectly. Characters such as the twins, the ministers and especially the businessman were to be found all over Eastern Europe those days. Last but not the least, the music of the Polish band "Elektryczne gitary" is brilliant.

Seksmisja (1984)

Two scientists are chosen as guinea pigs for a time experiment: they are placed in hibernation and should be brought back to life after three years. In the meantime, however, the World War III breaks out and life have been wiped out of the surface of the Earth. When they wake up, it turns out that not only 50 years have passed but also that they are the only living specimens of the male sex in a new, underground society composed exclusively of women. Max used to be woman-chaser so he finds himself in heaven. Albert, on the other hand, forgot all about love and sex as a serious scientist, but is willing to learn. So are the Amazons, who after a kiss turn into pliant kittens. The Council of Women is going to decide their fate, so they are trying to win more time. Eventually they make it to the surface, helped by beautiful Lamia. On the surface it turns out that there is life there and somebody has been living a decent life...

One day Mr. Krzakowski, the President of some state-owned company, believed to be replaced soon, gets to know that a girl is pregnant with him. He realizes that she is a daughter of some high officer in the state. He wants to marry her to keep his job, but first he must get a divorce. He uses anything and anybody he can to find a proof of his wife's infidelity.

The movie, made by the same author as _Mis (1981)_, has the similar concept. The characteristic for communistic regime hierarchy of officers, in which anybody knows his/her place. Nobody wants to work for anybody else, everybody is disparaged by those who are higher than him. Lots of funny jokes, gags, however, some of them can be understood only by people who lived in those times.

Poszukiwany - Poszukiwana (1973)

Stanislaw works in an art museum in Warsaw; it's not a very well-paid job, and his boss is a bit of a martinet. When a painting is found to be missing from the store room, the boss accuses Stanislaw and gives him 24 hours to return it, or go to jail. Well, Stanislaw is innocent, so he can't return it, and he decides to borrow some of his wife's clothes and her wig, and go into hiding as a woman, Maria. He gets a job as housemaid, although his practical home skills are pretty well non-existent, but a succession of amorous husbands, difficult children, and eccentric bosses drives him from one job to the next. Meanwhile his efforts to keep in touch with his wife lead to her becoming suspicious of his involvement with another girl he is talking to, and then when he kisses his wife amourously, the girl is scandalised to see what appear to be two women kissing. [This was 1973 in Poland, remember.] Finally he gets a decent place working for the director of an architectural practice; but this man has to write and deliver a presentation on the merits of his town-planning proposals, and this is not his strong point. Stanislaw (as Maria) helps with the text, and this is so successful that the boss wants Maria to accompany him to the presentation itself. However, there is a snag: Maria would have to pretend to be a man! The boss finds an old suit and tells Maria to put it on; but he isn't impressed with the result and castigates Maria for making such a poor show as a man. Obviously Maria is still walking and sitting down like a girl, so the boss's wife gives "Maria" some coaching in male body language. Will Stanislaw be trapped forever on the run and pretending to be Maria?

Hydrozagadka (1970)

It was supposed to be a parody of an american super-hero story, it became a parody on the life in Poland in the sixties. Today a cult-film among polish viewers. Sadly it is probably not easy to understand for somebody without knowledge about life in the former east-block, so don't try it if it is your first polish comedy to watch.
